<br/><br/> From Austro-hungarian Galicia, a multiethnic and multiconfessional geographical area ; Joseph Roth was always interested in the phenomena of multiculturality. In the novels he wrote in the Thirties he establishes a real poetics of memory which aims at a literary recreation of some multicultural spaces of Central and Oriental Europe. But at the very heart of these attempts lies a dynamic of disintegration, and also a hollowing-out that accounts retroactively for the unpredictable character and real fragility of his vision. Beyond the fleeting epiphanies of multiculturality appears the failure of the models of totality and cultural symbiosis staged in the text.  Für die verschiedensten Erscheinungen der Multikulturalität hat der im altösterreichischen Galizien geborene und aufgewachsene Schriftsteller Joseph Roth stets großes Interesse aufgebracht. In seinen Romanen aus den dreißiger Jahren ist eine Poetik der Erinnerung am Werk, die sich eine literarische Heraufbeschwörung und Rekonstruktion multikultureller Räume vom Osten Europas zum Ziel setzt. Was Roth in solchen Rekonstruktionsversuchen aber vor allem aufzeigt, ist eine unaufhaltsame Dynamik des Zerfalls und der Aushöhlung, die sein Unternehmen zum Scheitern verurteilt. Die literarischen Bilder der kulturellen Symbiose und Totalität erweisen sich letztendlich als besonders labil und brüchig.
