L’histoire littéraire comme flux et reflux. Enquête sur la réception d’une métaphore maritime chez Stefan Zweig

<br/><br/> Tandis que les conférences de Stefan Zweig des années 1930 consacrées à l’idée d’Europe ont été abondamment commentées et critiquées, il demeure un point aveugle dans la recherche, à savoir la réception de la méthode d’histoire littéraire comparative développée par le critique littéraire danois Georg Brandes. À partir de l’étude de la conférence de 1929 consacrée à « L’idée européenne dans la littérature », restée longtemps inédite, et une relecture de la conférence de 1932 sur « L’idée européenne dans son développement historique », l’article revient sur l’évolution de l’appropriation par Stefan Zweig des théories brandesiennes. L’appropriation de la métaphore du « flux et du reflux » trouvée dans les Grands courants littéraires au XIX e  siècle nous amènera à interroger le projet d’histoire culturelle de l’idée européenne que propose Stefan Zweig dans les années 1930.  ‪While Stefan Zweig’s essays on the European idea in the 1930s have been extensively commented on, the reception of the method of comparative literary history developed by the Danish literary critic Georg Brandes remains a blind spot in the research field. Based on a study of the lecture on “The European Idea in Literature” (1929), first published in 2019, and a re-reading of the 1932 lecture on “The European Idea in its Historical Development”, the article reviews the evolution of Stefan Zweig’s appropriation of Brandes’ theories. The appropriation of the metaphor of the “ebb and flow” found in the Main Currents in Nineteenth Century Literature will lead us to question the project of cultural history of the European idea that Stefan Zweig proposed in the 1930s.‪  ‪Während Stefan Zweigs Vorträge über die europäische Idee aus den 1930er Jahren ausgiebig kommentiert und kritisiert wurden, fehlt in der Forschung immer noch eine Studie über die Rezeption der vom dänischen Literaturkritiker Georg Brandes entwickelten Methode der vergleichenden Literaturgeschichte. Ausgehend von der Untersuchung des Vortrags von 1929 über „Die europäische Idee in der Literatur“, der erst 2019 veröffentlicht wurde, und einer erneuten Lektüre des Vortrags von 1932, „Der europäische Gedanke in seiner historischen Entwicklung“, geht der Artikel auf die Entwicklung von Stefan Zweigs Aneignung der Brandes’schen Theorien ein. Die Aneignung der Metapher von „Ebbe und Flut“, die in den Hauptströmungen der Literatur des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts gefunden wurde soll dazu dienen, das Projekt einer neuen Kulturgeschichte der europäischen Idee zu hinterfragen, das Stefan Zweig in den 1930er Jahren vorschlägt.‪
