N1 - 91 N2 - The history of the Deutsch de la Meurthe is typical of the rise of the new upper middle-class, which by the end of the XIXth century is an important contribution to the renewal of the social elite. Alexandre Deutsch, with the help of his two sons Henry and Emile, sets up a huge industrial structure of oil-refining, in France and all over Europe afterwards. This brilliant economical achievement will lead this Jewish family up to the highest place among the middle-class of Paris. The two brothers then, step after step, commit themselves in philanthropic action which will prove their attachment to France, in those troubled times with the interplay between nations and also a vicious anti-Semitism. They do not quit their Jewish identity; nevertheless they consider this belongs to privacy. When it comes to what they will leave to posterity, they choose off large-scaled projects in favour of the French country, such as supporting the war effort through aircraft sponsoring or rebuilding during the years 1920 such as the Cité universitaire (International Student Residence) in Paris. Henry Deutsch’s daughter, Suzanne, will keep to the family tradition by supporting the rebuilding of the village called Moÿde-l’Aisne, devastated during the First World War UR - https://shs.cairn.info/revue-archives-juives1-2009-1-page-105?lang=fr&redirect-ssocas=7080 ER -
