The Priory of Saint-Fromond, the Abbey of Cerisy and the “Last Norman Pancarte”

<br/><br/> Pancartes, medieval historical documents drawn up by monasteries to record a sequence of gifts received, are one of the main sources of diplomatic documents emanating from religious houses in northern France in the eleventh and early twelfth centuries. However, comparisons with other sources show that their recomposition over the course of multiple transactions poses problems for historians. This article considers an especially problematic pancarte, the final version of which was issued for the Benedictine priory of Saint-Fromond (Manche) in 1239. The discovery of a hitherto unknown copy, which is more complete and apparently more accurate than all other versions, provides an opportunity to reconsider this text and its significance for the history of the priory; for its motherhouse, the abbey of Cerisy-la-Forêt; and for the priory’s benefactors, especially the Du Hommet family. This article provides a new edition of this pancarte, and it uses hitherto ignored English resources to cast fresh light upon the development and composition of this text and of the priory’s possessions.  Les pancartes constituent un des principaux groupes de sources diplomatiques émanant des maisons religieuses du nord de la France au xie siècle et début du xiie siècle. Cependant, les comparaisons avec d’autres sources montrent que leur recomposition au fur et à mesure de transactions multiples pose problème aux historiens. Cet article prend en considération une pancarte particulièrement problématique dont la version finale a été émise pour le prieuré bénédictin de Saint-Fromond (Manche) en 1239. La découverte d’une copie jusqu’à présent inconnue, plus complète et plus précise que toutes les autres versions, fournit une opportunité de reconsidérer ce texte et sa signification pour l’histoire du prieuré, mais aussi pour celle de sa maison mère, l’abbaye de Cerisy-la-Forêt, ainsi que pour ses bienfaiteurs, particulièrement la famille Du Hommet. Cet article fournit une nouvelle édition de cette pancarte et utilise des sources anglaises jusqu’alors ignorées pour mettre en lumière l’élaboration et la composition de ce texte ainsi que les possessions du prieuré.
