N2  - RésuméAu-delà du caractère rituel que l’islam confère au pèlerinage, un grand nombre de pèlerins musulmans exercent des activités commerciales qui engendrent des profits substantiels. Les diverses stratégies mises en œuvre tendent toutes à rentabiliser le voyage en Arabie Saoudite. En s’appuyant sur la typologie des pèlerins observée dans le cadre de l’espace public camerounais, cet article passe en revue certaines des initiatives des candidats potentiels à La Mecque, tant à l’époque de la colonisation qu’après l’indépendance, en étudiant leurs inventions respectives en termes de création ou d’adaptation des modalités d’accumulation; Beyond the ritual significance of the pilgrimage in Islam, a great number of Muslim pilgrims also engage in business activities with significant profit margins. The various strategies used by both “pilgrim-traders” and “trader-pilgrims” are all geared towards generating profits out of the journey to Saudi Arabia. Based on a typology of pilgrims observed in the Cameroonian public space, this paper reviews, in both colonial and postcolonial settings, some of the initiatives undertaken by the potential pilgrims to Mecca by examining their creative inventions and adaptations of various methods of accumulation
