TY - BOOK AU - Dupuy,Lionel TI - Jules Verne's Extraordinary Voyages, or the Geographical Novel of the 19th Century PY - 2013///. N1 - 7 N2 - The Extraordinary Voyages ( Voyages Extraordinaires) of Jules Verne (1828-1905) were always described by the novelist himself as “geographical novels.” This paper provides an analysis of the various recurring elements found in these narratives that enable us to better define the contours of a genre that came into being during the second half of the 19th century and then faded out after the First World War. The incorporation of a potent imagination in the novels is an active ingredient for writing about and spreading geographical knowledge and for creating a fundamental link between poetry, myth, and exoticism. As a result, the narratives of Jules Verne belong to a genre we can define as the “geographically marvelous.” UR - https://shs.cairn.info/journal-annales-de-geographie-2013-2-page-131?lang=en&redirect-ssocas=7080 ER -
