Varieties of Intellectual Disability - 2007.

1

Among the different varieties of intellectual disability described historically in psychopathological treatises, the author analyzes two instances observed up until the 19th century: albinism and deaf-muteness. Revisiting the studies of the time, he shows how these people showed physical malformations or disabilities that were directly associated with manifest psychological disturbances. Beyond being a historical study into the theoretical notions developed on the subject, this article sheds light on the construction of psychopathology, articulating it with contemporary psychoanalytical theories.
