Reinvention, Surprise, and Improvisation

This paper starts out from the notion of analytic setting to question the rigidity of the analyst’s technique. Among Freud’s technical recommendations and Lacan’s constructions on the place and discourse of the analyst, there must be a focus on the omnipresence of the dimensions of reinvention and improvisation on the analyst’s part; these must continuously accompany the improvisation to which the analysand is subjected in the psychoanalytic set-up. As the analyst’s experience allows him or her a certain freedom of action, they discover the true sense of their practice in a laboratory-like dimension where, at each session, a surprising real is interrogated, a real which must be dealt with by means of improvisation.
