N1 - 97 N2 - This study focuses on the controversy surrounding the causes of postpartum depression (PPD). Although it is implicitly believed that birth plays a triggering role in PPD, this hypothesis is not strongly supported. In order to further explore this issue, a qualitative analysis of the causes of depression as perceived by mothers suffering from PPD (n = 20) and non-postnatal depression (NPD: n = 10). The results do not support the hypothesis of an etiology directly related to birth in the development of PPD.
