N2  - Breastfeeding is a well-attested practice in ancient near Eastern sources from the middle of the third millennium BCE onward. Cuneiform texts provide a wealth of information regarding both wet nurses working for elites, and suckling babies, who are often mentioned in lists of low-status workers. The present article offers an overview of the sources available for the study of breastfeeding in the ancient Near East, focusing in the specific on images in cylinder-seals and terracotta plaques, as well as in administrative texts and legal documents from a chronological period that goes from 2 300 to 1 500 BCE
