N2  - Partant de la biographie de Chauveau et de l’étude des illustrations qu’il exécuta pour l’ Histoire de France de Gabriel Audin, on démontre ici l’importance des images dans ce livre, le rapport qu’elles entretiennent avec le texte et l’effet qu’elles produisent sur le lecteur ainsi que les impératifs auxquels l’artiste dut obéir, sa compréhension du texte et sa liberté face au programme apparemment très précis que lui soumit l’auteur; Starting from the biography of Chauveau and the study of the illustrations he made for the Histoire de France by Gabriel Audin, we show here the importance of the images in this book, the relationship they have with the text, and the effect they produce on the reader, as well as the imperatives that the artist had to obey, his understanding of the text, and his freedom with respect to the seemingly very precise brief submitted to him by the author
