This paper describes why, according to Levinas, paganism, as closely linked to what is sacred and to myths, does not allow human beings to become morally responsible. It also explains why it is necessary for the monotheist faith to be put to the test of the metaphysical atheism which does not allow us to think of God as close to us. It concludes by examining the meaning of a love of Torah within a world where so many human beings feel God has hidden His Face.
