Cyberlanguage and Orthography: What Are the Effects on Students’ Spelling Level in Third and Fifth Grade? - 2007.

8

Very few studies are interested in the cyberlanguage (used in chat room on Internet or with cellphones). Those existing attempted to describe the syntactic characteristics of this language without relating them with the traditional French spelling. The aim of this research is to create this link by analysing the relations between cyberlanguage and traditional spelling in 5th, 7th and 9th graders. Results indicated that the best 5th grader’s spellers used a most correct “SMS” style. In 7th grade, there was a negative correlation between the score to the questionnaire about Internet practices and dictation score. More these children have knowledge about cyberlanguage, more their spelling performances were weak, and conversely.
