TY - BOOK AU - Gillig,Philippe AU - Légé,Philippe TI - J. S. Mill on cooperatives: From mistrust to praise – the constitution of a liberal thought in the first half of the 19th century PY - 2017///. N1 - 54 N2 - This article examines the shift in John Stuart Mill’s liberalism through the analysis of his viewpoint on cooperatives. Comparing the criticism he addressed in 1825 to the Owenite co-operatives, on the one hand, to the apology of cooperatives later on in the Principles, on the other, we show that he will gradually operate a form of synthesis between liberalism and socialism, both seen as bearing a democratic ideal. This also comes from the fact that Mill perceives cooperatives as the source of a moral revolution. In addition, this study leads to rethink with Mill the relation between liberalism and “capitalism”.JEL Codes :?B12, B14, P13 UR - https://shs.cairn.info/journal-papers-in-political-economy-1-2017-2-page-197?lang=en&redirect-ssocas=7080 ER -
