If it is true that certain forms of so-called religious violence are more political than religious, the thesis that all violence deemed to be religious is never anything but political violence is a form of revisionism. Monotheistic religions, in particular, have developed a specifically religious motivation for violence that is easily identifiable, namely, of destroying the gods of others in order to impose their own, a motivation that is unknown in the polytheistic world.
