A medieval approach to territorial councils’ logos: Semiotics of style and abstract figures
- 2015.
23
This article focuses on discernible dichotomies between themes and figures, figurative and abstract, with reference to French territorial councils’ logos. Problematics of style, stylistic figures, and abstraction are explored. Medieval iconology and the concept of habitus, linked with the Western opposition of rationalism versus intuitionism, are used to explain these dichotomies, as well as the processes of absorption and incorporation in the semiotic sphere. Semiotic issues are touched upon, such as the risk of loss of meaning inferred by an excessive use of abstractive aesthetics in communication nowadays.
