Such a beautiful story: Hoaxes and the making of profile stories in the media
- 2016.

Profile stories have become a very popular genre in the media. They are expected to meet a number of conditions, making them a highly codified form of journalism with their own fixtures. This paper focuses on the media hoax of Anouk V., a fake cancer survivor. It shows that her story spread easily precisely because it was perfectly aligned with media expectations. Framed as a success story, it enabled the media to address a sensitive subject (serious illness) without offending public sensitivities. This hoax also shows that profile stories are often exempt from the rules and routines that apply to other media genres.
