Parental Reflective Functioning and Child Psychiatry Service Users: An Exploratory Study

<br/><br/> Reflective functioning (RF) refers to the capacity to perceive and interpret our and others’ behaviors in terms of mental states. It has been identified as a variable related to the development of psychopathology in a population of children receiving psychiatric services. Since the development of RF is highly influenced by the parent-child relationship, this study aims to explore RF in thirteen parents of children receiving psychiatric services. A semi-structured interview (Parent Development Interview—Revised; PDI-R) was analyzed in light of two systems, one aiming to measure the PRF level (Slade, et al., 2005) and the other assessing the parents’ affective experience regarding their parent-child relationship (Henderson, Steele and Hillman, 2007). Results highlight a lower PRF in the sample assessed than what would be expected in the general population, as well as differences among mothers versus fathers and parents presenting higher versus lower RF.
