This paper sets out to study why German multinationals set up in Eastern European countries. An empirical analysis is made of the firms using a new database provided by the Bundesbank. The decision as to where to site German firms is not just dependent on the traditional determinants of FDI (foreign direct investment). It also depends a great deal on factors inherent in the transition to a free market economy.
