N2  - The purpose of this paper is to trace back the origins of the notion of “management” through its latin form : “gerere”. We found that its modern foundations were already present in Roman politics : rationality, responsibility, benevolence and effectiveness. Starting from the analysis of the usage of the verb “gerere” and of its derivatives in ancient sources, this study allows us to understand how – between the Ist century B.C. and the IIIrd century A.D. – thinkers and literates, emperors and directors as well as common people defined “management”, and in particular “good management”. This allows us to trace back the theoretical, ideological and practical stages of the invention of a new political and governmental category in Roman times
