The duration of the therapeutic session for adolescents is always difficult to determine. It is also difficult to choose the time to start psychotherapy. Facing a mental disorder that the adolescent cannot express, the analyst is bound to choose a neutral attitude the author refers to as “committed.” Based on clinical experience, a reflection about the specificity of adolescent transfer and the role of the analyst should take place. “Neither too early nor too late” is a difficult ideal to achieve, and one that requires answering a complex question: “when is the right time to consult”?
