Jacques Lacan began using a different model of language when he coined the neologism “ lalangue” in the early 1970s. However, when confronted with the new expression, readers hesitate between a simple witticism and a new concept, especially since Lacan did not explain its implications in the field of psychoanalysis. This paper briefly reviews the history of this term and then examines its clinical pertinence in psychopathological cases of prelingual deafness.
