La plupart des critiques s’intéressant aux mésostiches de Cage à partir de Finnegans Wake s’attachent aux sens seconds que produit la méthode aléatoire systématique de Cage. En élaborant le concept de transcohérence qui impose un ordre à la dissonance cognitive textuelle sans jamais totalement la réguler, cet essai tente de penser le paradoxe que constitue la cohérence au sein même de l’incohérence; The mesostic (medial-acrostic) writings of John Cage pose an interpretational problem: how does a reader negotiate a treated source text whose procedural method yields incoherent phrases with minimum semantic reward? Most critics of Cage’s “writings through” Finnegans Wake have dwelt on the second-order meanings of Cage’s systematic chance method. This essay attempts to conceptualize the paradox of a coherence within incoherence via the concept of transcoherence as an order imposed upon, yet never totally controlling, textual cognitive dissonance
