Lacan’s “I don’t want to know anything about it”

One can only be surprised by the affirmation that opens Lacan’s seminar Encore, where we hear that his thought process was along the lines of “I don’t want to know anything about it.” This assertion is all the more surprising, since he qualifies it by not wanting to know anything specific to the analysand, and since that distance would be a reason to interrupt the analysis. The text initiates a commentary on Lacan’s assertion insofar as it concerns every analysand who becomes an analyst.
