Linking relational and spatial perspectives: The case of competitiveness clusters

The focus on cooperation networks between industrial and scientific actors has renewed the literature on clusters and innovation processes. However, this relational approach deserves further investigation insofar as it has led to a somewhat binary (global/local) approach to the spatial dynamics of innovation networks. This paper combines a relational and spatial approach to networks in the study of the case of France’s competitiveness cluster policy. Combining social network analysis and the conventional mapping of networks enables us to better understand the links between the ongoing structuration of actor networks and their spatial dynamics. Through the comparative and diachronic analysis of seven competitiveness clusters in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, this paper sheds light on the territorialization of innovation networks anchored in the same region but embedded in various industrial fields.
