The conditions of creation of the “Meilleurs Ouvriers de France” (Best Workers of France) competition in the 1920s-1930s show it to have been a plan for raising the prestige of manual trades and technical teaching, with backing from a range of actors from different backgrounds and social classes. The selection of winners and the presentation of masterpieces lead to a definition of occupational excellence that distinguishes the stars of work and copies academic and artistic categories by using emulation to it advantage.
