This article questions the place of volunteers in an emergency reception center for homeless women.  L'Escale operates thanks to the presence of a paid team and many helpers—“laypeople” or “professionals”—who work for “free” and are essential to the support of these women. Despite the efforts made to professionalize, the system cannot avoid losing volunteers. The thinning line between free and paid work calls into question the organization, meaning, and sustainability of the system and weakens all contributors.
