This article analyses innovation as an expression of the practice and discourse acted out in the particular context of the music industry. We attempt to show that the many possibilities opened up by the digitization of content and tools has boosted the dissemination of “bottom-up innovation” and new practices that subvert some of the fundamental principles of the industry. But paradoxically, the very attempts to reappropriate and redistribute the value of musical items through these digital developments are helping to legitimize and enhance the value of those same items, and are thus perpetuating the traditional rules of the game.
