How should one define research in the arts? How does it fit into the creative process? How can artists be helped to handle the temporality of research, which suspends the dominant tempo of production and distribution? These questions arise especially in higher education in the sphere of culture, where art schools have been breaking new ground for some ten years. Hence the idea, tested now in various schools, of a creative arts doctorate that would cater fully for the demands of both academia and art. The research task force of the creative arts directorate will be addressing the many challenges that arise in research in the arts to put forward different development schemes and tools.
