For a hero, whether fictional or real, to emerge from a group, there must be people undertaking the process of hero-making. Supported by myths and ideologies, the hero must meet a social and cultural need, and this depends on authorities—whether governmental or private—that can produce accounts of events. Without a record, there is no hero! Currently, the supply from armed forces is poor, while there exists a demand for epic heroes, not least among the young; and yet there is no lack of raw material in terms of heroic actions achieved by our soldiers. There is also a need for the authorities responsible for the way the military relate to society to take an interest in those actions, record them and supply them to the market for artistic and literary creation. The whole production apparatus for bringing military heroes up to date needs to be redesigned. While the ease with which soldiers can now be seen and heard nationally presents a problem, this enterprise of making armed professionals into heroes is more needed than ever UR - https://shs.cairn.info/journal-inflexions-2011-1-page-121?lang=en&redirect-ssocas=7080 ER -
