The place that the armed forces occupy in public consciousness is declining, leading to the risk of soldiers being isolated in a world with postmodern values. This article puts these assertions to the test by applying them to young people’s relationships with the military. It reviews the arguments relating to the decline of armed forces in France and to nostalgia for military service. It asks about the values of young people as shown by a recent study, highlights developments, and notes that the changes in those values are not totally different from those at work in the military itself.
