<br/><br/> Advance directives force anticipation of the vulnerability of death, and open discussion of a situation, to create a climate of trust between patients, physicians, and health care providers, without setting family members aside. They are a precious tool, and the expression of deep wishes and promises, but also of spiritual commitment. They give health care providers an opportunity to forge an alliance, and to give ethical direction to their efforts to accompany the patient. The spiritual focus of these directives is linked to their encouragement of everything that can help guide the patient’s path towards the inner light regained from the night.
