Created in 1949 with the goal of dissuading any aggression of the Western European countries by the Soviet Bloc, the Atlantic Alliance should have disappeared with the fall of the Wall. However, it was maintained and even expanded, today carrying out its primary mission of collective defence of the European territory and effectively continuing the more recent mission of cooperative security. It appears, however, to be more hesitant with regard to the management of crises, having difficulty to imagine what could be a military strategy adapted to this type of situations. However, a new concept of restricted engagement, with clear and limited objectives, appears to be more and more necessary if the members of the Alliance truly want to ensure defence of the frontline of the European territory.
