38
From the ceremony on 11 November 1920, when the Unknown Soldier was taken to the Pantheon and the Arc de Triomphe, through to the last anniversary of the Armistice in November 2016, the successive heads of state have made commemoration speeches in which the soldier who died for France plays a variable role. This text speaks of these speeches, tracing the developments in the society and politicians’ relationship with the soldier who died in combat.
