<br/><br/> Obstinacy can be a quality when it refers to perseverance and tenacity, but it is dangerous when it is mere stubbornness, doubling down on error. When confronted with the false guilt of officer Dreyfus, a large proportion of the nation chose the peril of the second route. The high command of the army and its supporters were entrenched in an insistence bordering on obsession, with ingredients that combined to compound the danger. Four failures will cause the downfall of the persecutors of Alfred Dreyfus—preterition, repetition and claustration leading to perdition.
