Social mobility is a core programmatic element in liberal, egalitarian and democratic societies, and is sought after as such. Elevating oneself ‘above’ one’s own roots is also the norm among individualistic societies and is monitored with great care. However, social mobility comes with its fair share of social costs. Among them, we find dis-insertion – a plague that can be actively fought through social policy.
