Religious traditions encourage us to elevate ourselves and access that which is ‘higher’ than man. Elevating oneself through prayer, however, does not mean putting aside the human condition and the state of personal fragility in which our existence plays out. Prayer is rather like letting the breath of the Most High descend into our lives, into their concrete nature and into the share of suffering that punctuates them. Through the concrete fraternity it creates, prayer allows us to rise as one, to go through unimaginable challenges all together – including humiliation and perhaps even death.
