Morality is a biological adaptation specific to the human species. It is based on evolved functional capacities that emerge quickly during a child's very early development. In this article, we begin to understand the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms that underlie these innate building blocks of morality in young children. This new knowledge not only changes our ideas about babies but gives us a new perspective on human nature itself, beyond the sterile opposition between nature and culture.
