Use of video games among adolescents in Ille-et-Vilaine: Should general practitioners be monitoring it? - 2022.

93

Context. Video games are one of the most popular pastimes of the twenty-first century, especially among adolescents. In 2018, the WHO defined gaming disorder in ICD-11. Despite the request for support and guidance from parents, the use of video games is rarely discussed during medical consultations. Objective. To review the use of video games among adolescents in Ille-et-Vilaine. To establish a prevalence of problematic use in this population. Method. A quantitative, epidemiological, and transversal study of ten public and ten private schools drawn at random in Ille-et-Vilaine by means of a dematerialized survey. Results. While video games remain a hobby for most, the way in which one-quarter of high school students in Ille-et-Vilaine use video games is considered problematic. It therefore seems important to detect this use in order to prevent potential health and socio-familial consequences. Conclusion. This study underlines how important it is for general practitioners to address the topic of video games in primary and secondary prevention with their young patients and their families.
