A “romantic” woman: the mother, the romantic in Écrire la vie

If the mother figure occupies a non negligible part in Annie Ernaux’s work, its representation is still being questioned. At first a character in the former novels, the female writer’s mother seems to lose its romantic characteristics in the narratives of facts: A Woman’s Story and I Remain in Darkness. However, the romantic is not dismissed: it is inscribed in the work’s structure and in the tension of the writing in quest of a “truth” of maternal images.
