The existence of social classes, whose return is announced by some, and whose disappearance is heralded by others, remains at the heart of the controversies that are polarizing not only the world of social sciences, but also the world of politics and media. While controversies contribute to the making or un-making of social classes, can we conclude that social classes are truly a “social construction”? Recalling that a social class is also a symbolic and political construction does not entail a rejection of the discovery of objective social classes, as attributed to Marx and then taken up by Bourdieu.
