This paper addresses the issue of whether after years of openness, a new regime of growth based on a fairer income distribution followed by the development of the domestic market is likely to contribute to sustainable recovery in major Latin American economies. The paper stresses two factors: the extent of the openness and the scope for reducing income inequalities.
