Having long been stigmatized as one of the most inegalitarian countries in the world, Brazil has shown a decrease in income inequalities since the second half of the 1990s. The fall in regional disparities as well as income inequalities appears to be the result of the deindustrialization process Brazil has undergone since the end of the 1980s. Unlike what is sometimes argued, President Lula's coming to office cannot explain these changes.
