This paper argues that sports stand as a key space for feminist thinking and activism, with a specific accent on sporting bodies. Through an analysis of the existing literature, the authors highlight what it means to do feminist research applied to sports, concentrating on history, sociology and philosophy. They then examine who is involved in what they term the “sportswomen’s cause”, and identify some of the conservative dynamics at play within the field of sports. Finally, they offer avenues for research and action that could better account for the diversity of sporting bodies, building on interdisciplinarity and collaboration with the fields of biomedicine, the arts and sports institutions.
