Psychic Processes in Work Groups: Beyond Bion and Pichon-Rivière

This paper explores psychic processes in work groups. Starting from the pioneering research of the British psychoanalyst Bion and the Argentinean Pichon-Rivière, the author shows that the anxieties that underpin the realization of the task described by these two authors cannot be generalized as they have often been in training and therapy groups. This accounts for his proposal of other and complementary unconscious phenomena when the task is an operational one and when the work group is part of an organization. In conclusion, the author describes the individual psychological skills needed to contribute effectively to group work and the possible consequences in terms of training and intervention.
