Revealing One - 2016.

93

Individuals who are chronically ill often have to deal with a double punishment. First, their physical and mental integrity is affected, and then the illness inevitably impacts other spheres of life, notably the working situation. This study, based on a literature review, analyzes the factors that are taken into account when a person decides, or not, to reveal his or her chronic illness. We relate the repercussions that the revelation of illness can have on a person’s work environment, employment, work orientation, career, or professional projects. Chronic illness affects a person, but also his or her own peers at work. Several processes are engaged to maintain health, in spite of everything, in the workplace. Some obstacles are encountered. Revealing one’s own illness can help chronically ill persons or make their life more difficult. Making a chronic illness visible is a social issue.
