N2  - The article discusses the work of career development consultants through their discursive practices. It is based on a survey of a public-sector operator providing career development support to executives. After discussing the difficulties encountered by researchers in recording support interactions, and highlighting the tensions that run through this profession, the article shows how the consultants’ discursive practices relay the ideology of activation specific to current employment policies. However, an analysis of their career paths helps us to understand why, in some cases, they suspend this activation injunction to work toward emancipating their clients
