Do recent economic successes in Egypt mean that the economy is emerging? The concept of an emerging economy is widely used in development studies literature and proves particularly useful in answering the question at hand. A model of emergence as a combination of three levels forming a virtuous circle is described and used to gauge the Egyptian economic situation. Recent economic successes are shown to be due a lot more to conjuncture and a lucky spell with rents than to any significant broader process of emergence.
