<br/><br/> The year 1979 was a turning point in which the fall of the Shah of Iran led to the establishment of a theocracy imposed by Ayatollah Khomeini. The same year saw the start of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. These fundamental strategic changes in the Middle East pushed France to take action in Lebanon and around the Arabian Peninsula.
