The geopolitics of nickel: Are Indonesia’s and New Caledonia’s destinies tied?

New Caledonia and Indonesia are both nickel-producing countries. The industry of the first is in crisis as a result of competition from the second, which is more competitive in the market. And yet nickel accounts for 94 per cent of New Caledonian exports, which makes it a major political stake for Noumea in view of the risk of collapse of the industry. Thus, there is a need to apply collective consideration to evolving from this nickel-dependent trade environment.
